Firm History

Jane C. Bergner initiated her law firm, the Law Offices of Jane C. Bergner, in 1993, following twenty-five years of tax law practice, first as a Trial Attorney with the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice from 1967 to 1974 and, then, in private practice as an associate and partner in a number of law firms in Washington, D.C.

Jane has been selected by the Forbes In-Flight Radio Network as one of America’s Most Influential Women, and her interview in which she describes her tax practice is to be broadcast on all American Airlines flights in Spring, 2006 and in September and October, 2006 on all US Airways and America West flights as part of the Newsweek Business Show. From 1986 to 1990, Jane was the elected chair of the D.C. Bar’s 1500 member Taxation Section. She also chaired that section’s Tax Audits and Litigation Committee in which capacity she initiated a program in the metropolitan D.C. area to assist non-filers in reentering the Federal tax system. The program received the Bar’s award in 1993 for Best Section Community Outreach Project.

Jane has been a member of the Judicial Conferences of the United States Tax Court and the United States Court of Federal Claims. She is also the author of extensive chapters on Tax Court Practice in both the Mertens treatise on the Law of Federal Taxation and West’s Federal Forms Series, as well as the updated chapter on Court of Federal Claims Practice, also included in West’s Federal Forms volume on National Courts. She was also one of three members of the private bar appointed by the Chief Judge of the United States Tax Court to a nine-member committee which drafted statutory provisions that were ultimately included in the Technical Corrections Act of 1986. Other members of the committee were three judges of the U.S. Tax Court, the Chief Counsel, IRS and the Assistant Attorney General of the Tax Division, United States Dept. of Justice.

From 1993 to 1995, Jane chaired the American Bar Association Tax Section’s Regional Liaison Meetings Committee which facilitated meetings between members of the private bar and IRS supervisory employees throughout the United States. From 1991 to 1993, she was Chair of the Important Developments Subcommittee of the ABA’s Section of Taxation’s Committee on Civil and Criminal Tax Penalties. She now serves on the ABA Section of Taxation’s Committee on Government Relations.
